Sage is our 10 year old Golden Retriever; we have had him since he was a puppy. Three years ago he torn his ACL and had to have surgery on his knee twice in a matter of 4 weeks. The surgery and recovery was very difficult.

May 2008 he was diagnosed with an ACL tear in his other knee, my husband and I didn’t want to put him through anymore surgeries.  I started doing searches on the internet for natural remedies.  I hit on Horizon Veterinary Services and Dr. Susan Maier.  I called and Dr. Maier said she could see Sage the following day.  Dr. Maier agreed that there was damage but felt we could correct the problem without surgery.  Dr. Maier started Sage on ligament supplements and also a rabies detox program, we noticed improvement in his walking within a month.

Thanks to Dr. Maier’s holistic remedies, a year later Sage is running and playing today like he hasn’t done in three years.  He acts like he is 4 years old instead of 10.

Shara, our Shiloh Shepherd was hospitalized with a life threatening condition in December of 2008.  She had stopped eating, which we thought at first was because of a mouth injury, but her health continued to deteriorate.  She became dehydrated and lethargic. We were fortunate to get into the veterinarian on Christmas Eve.  It appeared that Shara might be in kidney failure and the vet wanted to hospitalize her right away.  Her condition stabilized and she came home on December 29, but went into another crisis that night and had to be hospitalized again the next day.  She finally came home to stay on January 2, 2009 with a diagnosis of Addison’s disease, which is an adrenal insufficiency. According to allopathic medicine, this condition requires pharmaceutical drugs (prednisolone & fludrocortisone) for the rest of her life and a constant monitoring of stress levels.  These medications have adverse side affects, some of which actually cause further deterioration of her physical body.  This was not acceptable to us.  We had to find another way and since we have been wholistically oriented most of our life, we knew we needed a 2nd opinion by a holistic veterinarian.

Dr. Maier was referred to us by a friend and I went onto Dr. Maier’s website to read about her and her practice.  I was impressed by what I read and decided to have a phone consultation with her, since we live in Ohio and she is in Kentucky.  During the consultation, Dr. Maier was more than willing to answer all of my questions, and I usually have a lot.  She gave me hope that Shara would probably not have to spend the rest of her life on medications that were harmful to her health and that she could live a good life.  She was also willing to consult with other holistic veterinarians if needed for additional insight.  I realized at that point that her most important intention was for Shara’s highest good.   That’s the kind of vet I wanted to find.

In May 2009, we were able to reduce the most harmful of Shara’s medications (prednisolone) by half the dose!  We are so grateful!  I know that by continuing to consult with Dr. Maier, that Shara will become healthier than she’s been in a long time.

I cannot give a higher recommendation than I would of Dr Susan Maier. I had a very beloved Brittany Spaniel that was at deaths door when I first took her to Dr Maier. She used holistic approaches that worked wonders with our Allie. She looked beyond her present condition of having seizures and looked at the overall health and love of life Allie still showed. My husband and I know that she made it possible for us to have our beloved four legged family member for seven more months that we would not have had otherwise. Allie was treated as a friend and loved one....Never as a sick old dog. If you are looking for a vet for your family pets...You have picked the right one.

Ten years ago I was the ideal per owner. I vaccinated for "everything", fed a "scientific" dry food
that was recommended by my allopathic vet and sprayed my house and dogs for fleas. My beloved Welsh Terrier, Max was the victim of my beliefs. He had spent his life with terrible allergies (which the vet routinely gave him prednisone shots for), had incredible digestive problems ( he got nothing but the special diet the vet sold) and suffered from epilepsy. He was nine years old when we went for his annual round of shots...and he was dead within a few days. He went into complete organ failure and died despite all out emergency care.
Finding Dr Maier at Horizon Veterinary services was like winning the lottery! To have a vet who didn't push yearly vaccinations, who offered flower essences and acupuncture and natural kibble was so wonderful. I now have 5 dogs...all healthy and happy. Phantom, the 16 year old comes in for a "tune up" monthly. When Phantom had to visit the allopathic vet to have several teeth removed Dr Maier sent us home with flower essences and homeopathic remedies to help with anesthesia recovery and healing process. Holistic medicine doesn't have to be an all or nothing proposition. I know in my heart this is the lesson my Max was here to teach me. I think holistic medicine should be spelled "wholistic", because it involves treating the entire being.

Susan Maier, D.V.M. is a calm, intuitive, understanding and confident force in the lives of animals and their people. When my black labradorable, Budgie, was diagnosed with cancer and it became apparent that "nothing could be done" by other vets to help her, Dr Maier turned our worst nightmare into a positive and hopeful experience. Budgie so loved going to see Dr Susan and technician Kim that when it came her time to leave this earth she insisted on allowing them to help her. Her trust in Dr Maier was infinite as is mine. From beginning to end, which was 2 years longer than originally estimated, Budgie was treated with tremendous love and respect while I was guided through her illness with constant support. Budgies' tail was wagging right up until she took her last breath, which tells a greater story about these wonderful people than words could ever say.

I highly recommend Dr. Maier. Based on the way she handled both my dog and my cat, I can see that she sincerely loves animals. Over the past few years, both I and my husband have visited a number of vets in the area. Many of these vets were impersonal and emotionless - treating our pets more like lab animals than well cared for patients. Dr. Maier, however, looks at each animal as a unique individual deserving of no less care than a person would receive. In addition to her depth of compassion and dedication to her profession, Dr. Maier is also very resourceful. Every time we visit her clinic for check-ups, she is able to provide new and useful information in response to our questions. Her advice and attention has reinforced my confidence in holistic medicine as a favorable alternative to conventional veterinary care. I want everyone to know that there ARE safer ways to treat animals! Dr. Maier offers excellent (and affordable!) options for people wishing the best, most sensitive treatment for their beloved animals.

Milo is our 16 year old, much loved cat.  When Milo was ill several years ago, our hearts were broken.  He seemed perfectly normal except for the fact that he couldn't use his back legs.  Dr Maier was out of town when my husband took him to another vet that ran blood work.  He diagnosed FIP and suggested we put Milo to sleep.  When you looked into Milo's eyes, you realized euthanasia was not an option.

With Dr Maier's expertise and guidance Milo made a full recovery and has enjoyed good health to this day.  Each family member had a job to do for Milo. One bathed him, another fed him, another exercised his legs, and still another helped him outside to use the rest room.  Dr Maier used homeopathy and acupuncture along with antibiotics.  I had not heard of homeopathy and was vaguely familiar with acupuncture, although I didn't realize you could treat animals.  I am convinced that if it weren't for the homeopathy, acupuncture and the total commitment of love that Milo wouldn't be here today.

If great care for your pets is priority, then Horizon Veterinary Clinic is the place for you.  Your 4 legged children not only get great care, but you and your family do as well.  Dr. Susan has went out of her way to accommodate me if I have any need whether by phone or in person.  If I call she is always glad to call me back, if I need to get in I never have any trouble being seen.  Her heart is in what she does, I know that because I have seen it in how she treats me and my dogs.

Her staff was kind and considerate from the time I first called, when I got there with my 3 dogs and when I left.  Dr. Susan was such a joy to work with and talk to.  Very knowledgeable and considerate of my wishes for my dogs.  My goal is keep them healthy and treat them as naturally as possible when they do have issues arise.

You will wonder why you ever went anywhere else once you have been seen by Dr. Susan and her staff.  I love her and I am thankful to have her in our lives.

My 12 year old chow mix Nikki was diagnosed with liver cancer in September 2008 and given two months to live. Surgery to remove the diseased lobe was unsuccessful, so she was that much worse off for having had the procedure. Her hair was falling out, she was vomiting regularly and having severe diarrhea.

Three days after surgery we visited Dr. Susan, who gave me a glimmer of hope. She examined Nikki thoroughly, and reported that Nikki displayed a strong life force. She suggested dietary changes and prescribed several homeopathic remedies to boost liver function, calm her digestive system and restore her energy.

Dr. Susan also cautioned me to be positive, and not feed the disease with negative energy. Instead of referring to Nikki as a cancer dog, I call her my happy, healthy dog who is living a full life. When I feed her, I tell her that her food and medicine will make her healthy and strong.

It must be working! Now, a year later, Nikki is more energetic and full of life than ever! Her eyes are bright and shiny, she has a wonderful appetite and bounds around the house. She has lost a good deal of weight and most of her hair to the cancer, but aside from that, you would never know this dog is carrying a tumor the size of a football in her tummy.

Dr. Susan threw me a lifeline, gave me hope and encouraged me to focus on the positive, and not feed the disease with negative energy.
